Chapter twenty-four

MJ wondered what was up in the all-important briefing room.

She turned around to see her mother sitting in the waiting room, coffee in hand, staring at her.

“What?” MJ asked too harshly.

“Nothing.” She took a sip of her coffee with a smile on her lips.

“Oh, my goodness, Mother.” MJ rolled her eyes. “I’m going to go find the restroom.”

“It’s down the hall to the left,” her mother called after her. But MJ wasn’t going in that direction.

She crept back toward the main office area. As she suspected, it was empty. Everyone must be in the same meeting as Detective Hughes, she thought. A man’s voice came from the door nearest her. She moved toward it, trying her best to tread softly. She always had the “I’m looking for the restroom” excuse in her back pocket if someone found her there.

She crept toward the door, surprised to find that it was open. She got close enough to hear the conversation but stayed back enough to avoid being seen.

“One shot to the head. No one heard anything, but that’s a busy spot, or the shooter could have used a silencer. Forensics are on the scene with the officers who answered the call.”

“Da — I mean daaamp towels,” said a voice she recognized as Rory’s.

A few people snickered. MJ wrinkled her nose. What the heck did that mean?

“This changes things. We should consider this a sign of continuing threat,” Amber said.

“Unless he offed himself,” another man said.

It was quiet while they seemed to consider this.

“It’s also possible he was an unsuspecting murderer and didn’t know what he was delivering to the councilman,” she heard Jefferson say. “Whoever sent him to deliver the bomb could just be covering his tracks.”

“Or some other scenario we just aren’t seeing yet,” Amber said thoughtfully.

“I guess Rachel’s deal isn’t necessary anymore.” Jefferson sounded relieved.

That annoyed MJ. Why was he so determined to throw Rachel to the wolves?

“I know it bugs you, Jeff,” Amber said. “But she’s fulfilled her part. We got his parents’ information. Unfortunately, we are going to have to make a very unpleasant visit there.”

MJ covered her mouth and stood against the wall. Dylan was dead. She took a deep breath to calm her heart.

“I know it’s late, but Hughes and Jackson, I want you to get over to the scene and touch base with the medical examiner. See if she can draw any conclusions ruling out suicide. Then head to that shelter and find Aspen Klein. I don’t like how often she’s coming up in this investigation.”

“Got it,” responded Rory.

“Larson and Mendez, I’m sorry, but please go see Dylan’s parents. Break the news to them. If it’s possible, and if they are up to it, see what they know about their son’s whereabouts in the past two days, his affiliation with Aspen, or anything else that can explain why he dropped that bag at city hall.”

MJ closed her eyes. She saw Dylan again, crossing the street and flipping her off. It sickened her to think
